When does my child need to see an Occupational Therapist?

It may not always be clear when kids are just being kids or if it’s time for an occupational therapist to intervene for the child’s benefit. Your child would benefit from Occupational Therapy Service when he/she experiences some challenges in one or more areas outlined below:

  • Not reaching developmental milestones of sitting, crawling, and walking
  • Not developing age appropriate play and social skills
  • Difficulties with Manipulating toys and puzzles, Holding a pencil, using zipping, shoelaces etc
  • Not developing a hand dominance at an age-appropriate time
  • Avoiding tasks and games that require fine motor skills
  • Avoiding stimuli such as touch, movement, sights, sounds and other sensations or Under-responsive to certain sensations (e.g., high pain tolerance, doesn't notice cuts/bruises)
  • Erratic arousal levels and alertness
  • Poor concentration and attention to tasks
  • Awkwardness or frustration in motor activities e.g. be fearful of feet leaving the ground
  • Poor balance and coordination
  • Difficulty expressing themselves
  • Decreased self-esteem
  • Difficulties with recognising letters, computing letters or finding objects among other objects
  • Fussy eaters or refusing food items with certain textures or tastes
